Let’s talk about Céline for a minute. Did you know Céline only became famous for it’s bags, after the company was acquired by LMVH and when Michael Kors was named Creative Director for the brand in the 90’s? He was the reason behind it’s accessories driven collections while retaining its bourgeois, conservative French style and reputation for quality. He left Céline to pursue his own label and then came Phoebe Philo.
Her creative vision became Céline’s new trademark with an edge: an ideal that's at once sensual, austere, controlled, and achingly, achingly cool. We just love love loved Céline's bags at this point. Then Céline debuted an ad campaign featuring French dancer Marie-Agnes Gillot, model Freya Lawrence, and none other than ultimate intellectual dream girl Joan Didion. Collective happy-sigh.
Of all the celebrity fashion campaign appearances who better than to represent Philo’s ideals - ease of wear, understated and assured, structured yet fluid, for woman on the move. And then there is Didion who conjures aspirational longing, glamorous aloofness and well coolness from the inside out.
